The purpose of this Research Project was to explore ways that 1:1 student devices could positively impact engagement, collaboration and outcomes for teachers and learners. Pre-data collected from students and teachers indicated three main areas that we could target for investigation. The project identified that technology could impact positively on student motivation, engagement and results.
The research project identified the following in response to the inquiry question:
The research project identified the following in response to the inquiry question:
- Assessment methods matter
- Feedback feeds achievement
- Collaboration is key
- Feeling flexible is refreshing
LEGACY MODEL
Upon culmination of the project, the research team identified the following model for meaningful technology integration. Each aspect of the research project addressed one of the contributing factors illustrated below and proved there is benefit for students and teachers.
WHERE
The introduction of 1:1 devices changes the possibilities in the classroom. No longer is there necessarily a need for all children to sit in range of a board where the teacher displays lesson content. The ability for children to access lesson content in any location on such a portable device opens up a range of approaches to using the classroom space. Using technology in this way enabled us to trial Flexible Learning Environments with our students which had a direct correlation to student motivation, engagement and ownership of learning.
WAY
How children go about learning can contribute to the depth of their understanding and determine their engagement. While technology is not always the answer in this case, leveraging it effectively can greatly enhance the learning going on. Furthermore, developing collaboration skills, which are deemed essential for 21st century learners, make working in this way a valuable experience.
WHICH
Which assessment method is selected can impact student outcomes. Leveraging technology to design engaging tasks or allowing choice can be highly motivating to students and can result in improved outcomes.
